African Maasai Jewelry and Crafts Page under construction
The African Maasai Jewelry is from the Village of Protection in Narok, Kenyan. Hellen Nkuraiya is the Director of a residential school for widows, orphans and single women. The school offers education, training and living space for these women and their children. The Maasai women make jewelry and other handcrafts to help fund their school and living space. The jewelry is traditional Maasai work and I work directly with Hellen. She is also a teacher with a generous spirit who lives at the school and is herself a single women who has had the same life experience as her students.
The jewelry preserves the traditional jewelry making of the Maasai. Beading is one their major crafts. The use for the jewelry, the type of beading, the colors, and patterns have symbolic meaning and are designed for special life events, such engagement, marriage, birth, certain festivals, etc.
